Trust the Universe

Is this thing going to hold me up? What if I fall? What happens if it breaks? How often are safety checks conducted? How high is this really going? We’re going THERE?! How fast would I die if I fell? Would it be quick and painless, or would I be maimed, and die a slow death, cold and alone?

Shut up, Alley. You think too much.

I spent some time this week skiing, and the village where I stayed, Cortina d’Ampezzo, is tucked away in the mountains. It’s a ski town in the Dolomites in Northern Italy, but when you arrive, you don’t really see where you actually ski.

What you learn is, waaaaaaaaay up at the top of the highest mountain that you see, is a little lodge. And THAT’S where you catch the NEXT lift, in order to start skiing.

Awesome.

As I’m riding the lift, climbing higher and higher, I can’t help but ask the questions above.

“Is this thing going to hold me up? What if I fall? What happens if it breaks? How often are safety checks conducted? How high is this really going? We’re going THERE?! How fast would I die if I fell? Would it be quick and painless, or would I be maimed, and die a slow death, cold and alone?”

And at the end of my questioning, I reminded myself that it’s safe. I’m safe. All is well. Trust the city. Trust the engineers. Trust that everything will be fine. They can’t have people falling and dying. Bad for business.

Just trust, Don.

Aaaaaah yes. Just trust. Isn’t that what you always say anyway? Everything works for me? Life happens for you, not to you?

Sometimes life is scary. I love what Branson says: “If your goals don’t scare you a little, they aren’t big enough.” In the world of achievement and growth, sometimes our goals scare us. Climbing higher, pursuing lofty achievements, carving out new paths… it isn’t for the faint of heart.

We hit roadblocks, have to struggle, deal with our fears, our insecurities, our thoughts of inadequacies.

What if I fail? What will people think? Will they laugh at me? Accept me? Will I still be loved? Will I be okay?

Aren’t these the same types of questions we ALL ask ourselves, every day of our lives? Sometimes out loud, sometimes to ourselves, sometimes unconsciously.

Will the lift hold me up? Will it get me to the top? Is this safe? What happens if I fall? In other words, “Am I going to be okay?”

How we choose to answer these questions determines our outcome, doesn’t it? If we can’t answer positively, or we have the expectation of failure, we quit. We don’t even try to move forward.

But on the other hand, if when we learn to communicate with ourselves in a positive way, or as my friend Ryan says, “Be comfortable being uncomfortable,” then life can become magical.

Of course, we have fears. Of course, we get scared. And in the face of those fears, we calm ourselves and trust. Trust that everything will be okay. Trust that everything will work itself out.

So we keep pushing. We keep striving. We keep growing. We don’t quit. We trust. And we make it to the top of our mountain. Everything is going to be okay. It’s going to be more than okay. It’s going to be awesome, and the journey we take is going to make us stronger and more confident, whatever the outcome.
